SAN BENITO — For at least 15 years the San Benito Police Department has been hosting a food drive for the holidays, according to Lt. Michael Cortez.
Authorities will be at the Walmart located at 1126 W. U.S. Highway 77 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. getting food donations to give to the San Benito food pantry.
“This is a long-going tradition for the last 15 years around this time, we do it around this time because we know the holidays are coming up and there are a lot of needy people in the community,” Cortez said.
“We provide all the proceeds we get and food we receive to the local food pantry. Then they distribute the items to the needy,” he said.
Cortez said Walmart has been very helpful in hosting the event and they are grateful for their help.
“Boxed items like rice and non perishable items are best to donate. The food pantry has the means to preserve things like turkey so anything in general we will accept it as well as monetary donations,” he said.
According to Cortez as soon as the event is over they distribute the food to the pantry.
A team of officers will be set up at the entrance of the Walmart to accept every donation.
“We encourage the public to come out and help us help our community and the needy members. There are many who do not have much and we are just trying to supplement that as much as we can,” Cortez said.
According to him it has grown over the last couple of years and the department is grateful for the donations.
