HARLINGEN — From gathering donations and organizing inventory to distributing food, this nonprofit organization has been serving its community for nearly two decades.

In addition to their weekly duties, staff members and volunteers have recently been gearing up for its largest fundraising day of the year.

The Harlingen Food Pantry will host its annual Rummage Sale Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8th Harrison Church of Christ from 7 a.m. to noon.

The sale will have a variety of items, including toys, shoes, tools, clothes, jewelry, furniture and appliances.

Additionally, there will be a silent auction.

According to Harlingen Food Pantry board member Wende Coffman, all proceeds will benefit the food pantry.

On a monthly basis, the food pantry services about 1,200 to 1,400 people and spends close to $500 or more on food every week, according to Coffman.

“By coming to the sale and buying items, they’re supporting the whole community because all of the money that we raise goes right into the account that pays for the food we buy each week from the food bank,” Coffman said. “Not only is it a great opportunity to raise funds for the food pantry, it’s a wonderful time spent with our volunteers and customers that come in.”

Currently the pantry has close to 100 volunteers and is open Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Coffman said working with the food pantry has been a wonderful experience.

“There’s a great friendship among all of the volunteers and the clients as well,” she said. “We’ve made a lot of new friends and it gives retired people something meaningful to do, which means a lot to them.”
