SAN BENITO — Attendees of this scenic event will be able to time travel all the way back to 1836 and have a hands-on learning experience of how people in that era lived.

A Texas Independence Living History Day event will be held at the San Benito Fairgrounds, 25699 Cesar Gonzalez Parkway, off of FM 510, on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A historic campsite will be set up with Tejano, Texian and Mexican soldiers that will share the history and culture of 1836 and tell the story of Texas’ independence.

The soldiers’ camp will have a section for women and children who will be demonstrating sewing, cooking, caring for medical injuries and laundry techniques used during that time period.

Spectators will be able to interact with enactors and presentations about Tejanos’ service in Texas.

The event is organized by the Texas Heritage and Independence Celebration Association, an organization that was created in 2007 to preserve and promote Texas History.

“This event focuses on everyday living of the people that were in that time frame,” THICA Reenactment Coordinator Ruben Cordova said. “If anybody wants to see what we’re doing and is interested, we’re always looking for volunteers to join us.”

Admission and parking is free.

THICA organizers will sell hotdogs, chips and sodas as part of their fundraising.

Additionally, a $1 photo booth will be set up for attendees to take photos with reenactors.

Next event

According to organizers, Texas Independence Living History Day serves as a preview of THICA’s annual Texas Independence Celebration Happy Birthday TexasFest, which will be held March 13 and 14.

During this event, reenactments will be performed that will represent three key battles of Texas’ fight for independence from Mexico in 1835 to 1836 — Gonzales, the Alamo and San Jacinto.

“This will be THICA’s kick-off to March Happy Birthday TexasFest event,” THICA representative Anabeth Cordova stated in a press release. “We hope that this event will be the first of many monthly events that THICA will be undertaking.”
