Marathoners descend on Harlingen this weekend

HARLINGEN — Hey, hey, hey!

It’s that time again, time for drivers to be on the lookout for more than 1,200 runners to challenge the route of the Harlingen Marathon on Sunday.

“We have a lot of out of town and out of state,” said Edith Ellorum, assistant director of the race being coordinated by Footworks.

This is the third year the marathon has offered a 26-mile run.

“It’s actually going really very good,” she said. “I mean I think because it’s a Boston Qualifier it brings a lot of out of town people. It’s one of the races that offers finisher for the half marathon and full marathon.”

The race will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Fair Park and continue until 2 p.m. During that time, drivers should watch cautiously for runners along a route which will take them on long stretches of Jackson Avenue, Rio Hondo Road and East Grimes Street.

“They go down L Street all the way to Van Buren,” she said. “Then we get to Jackson Street. Jackson will be closed and they go all the way to City Lake. Then we head to Washington Street and go through the Woodlands.”

Harlingen Police Department will have a strong presence along the route, which will include more than 40 intersections such as Jackson and Commerce streets, 6th Street and Monroe, and Austin at 5th, 7th and 9th streets.

The course will offer several distances: 26.2 miles, 13.1 miles, a relay and a 5 K.
