Point Isabel ISD now offering schooling for 3-year-olds

PORT ISABEL — The Laguna Madre area is going to have new opportunities for early child instruction.

The Point Isabel Independent School District partnered with NINOS, Inc. Head Start to create the district’s new Early Childhood Program for 3-year-olds.

Garriga Elementary, located at 200 West Adams St., will be the participating location for the program.

The program is now accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year.

Applicants must meet the school district’s service requirements and Head Start income requirements.

Additionally, children must be 3-years-old on or before Sept. 1.

Head Start offers its services to more than 2,000 children a year in Cameron and Willacy counties.

According to Head Start’s website, the program promotes physical development both indoors and outdoors, serves a healthy breakfast, lunch and snack and provides medical, dental, hearing, vision and behavior screenings.

Additionally, the program is aimed toward promoting language and literacy development, early math and science concepts, as well as positive attitudes toward learning.

The program supports learning through play, creative expression and guided activities.
