Last Sunday, I met some friends for brunch, where as expected, it is actually OK to have a cocktail or two. No other custom, other than brunch, allows that in polite society.

Interestingly, it can't be just any cocktail. Eggs and Waffles with a whiskey back just doesn't cut it.

The traditional ones are mimosas (sparkling wine with orange juice) and bloody marys. To add variety, many places offer twists on the mimosa — such as mixed with grapefruit juice, cranberry juice, or other fruit juice rather than just orange.

And in South Texas and a few other places, beer is acceptable if it is in a michelada.

And now that we are in a craft cocktail renaissance, you have more options. Here are a couple that caught my eye:

Sangrita Cocktail (Pictured)

>> 1-1/2 oz tequila (I like Dulce Vida)

>> 2 oz orange juice

>> 1 oz tomato juice

>> 1 oz lime juice

>> 2 dashes of tabasco

Add all ingredients to a tall glass of ice and stir. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Pimm's Royale

(Several years ago, I wrote on the Pimm's Cup, made with that unique liqueuer I recommend called Pimm's. This one uses the same liqueur, but in a variation of the Kir Royale)

>> 1 oz Pimm's No. 1

>> 1/2 oz peach liqueur or peach schnapps

>> Sparkling wine

In a champagne flute, add the Pimm's and the peach liqueur. Top off with sparkling wine. Garnish with a strawberry.

Bicicletta

(Another flashback - I once brought you the Italian cocktail favorite called a Spritzer using Aperol or Campari. Both bitter sweet liqueurs take some getting used to, but worth it)

>> 1-1/2 oz Campari

>> 3 oz white wine

>> Club soda

In a large wine glass of ice, add the Campari and white wine. Top off with the soda and garnish with a lemon slice. Enjoy!
