San Benito High School junior Caroline Torres couldn’t wait to begin the school’s cosmetology class this year.

She enrolled in the program to learn more about her passion: doing hair and makeup.

“I was really excited about it. I have a passion for doing hair and makeup. I love it so far. I have learned so many things,” Torres said. “It’s like taking two classes in one. We are learning science and chemistry by mixing chemicals.”

Torres has been working on styling her mannequin, which she fondly calls “Wendy,” with spiraled curls and a beautiful tiara.

“I like doing the curls,” she said.

Instructor Susan Lopez said that the program for juniors and seniors has many benefits.

“It’s a good career that has a lot of opportunity to expand. The students are also learning chemistry, biology and anatomy and physiology in the process,” Lopez said.

Students are eligible to receive a cosmetology license after meeting the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation requirements and passing the state examination.

“The students are getting this for free,” said Lopez, who added that others seeking to do the same outside the school setting pay between $10,000-$17,000 to enroll in such a career.

Members of the district’s Maintenance Department converted the former Afterschool Program portable building into a full service salon, equipped with the hair salon stations, a nail salon, a facial salon and a conference room.

Director of Career Technical Education Hector Rendón said, “We have a salon-type of environment that prepares our students for licensing of the state exam,” he said. “Our students will have an edge because it is on campus and it makes it convenient for them. They will have an opportunity to obtain their license their senior year.”
