San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy welcomes incoming freshmen Approximately 300 incoming freshmen – members of the San Benito High School Class of 2022 – recently gathered at San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy (VMA) for the traditional “Fish Camp” orientation.

The informational event is designed to help “fish” transition from middle school to high school and career planning.

During their middle school years, the district’s incoming freshmen attended classes either at Miller

Jordan Middle School, Berta Cabaza Middle School, or San Benito Riverside Middle School.

Because the freshman grade level is a crucial point for students transitioning to high school and career planning, the freshman orientation provides students from the three middle schools with an opportunity to get to know one another while learning the expectations of high school life prior to the first day of school.

VMA Principal Gilbert Galvan explains that not only is the event designed to be a fun-filled event, it also helps students learn about testing requirements, rules, grade points, career planning and future goals, including making a smooth transition to high school and eventually, college.

“The event was a total success! These young men

and women are our future leaders. They are the future professionals of our society,” Galvan said.

“They are college ready, but we are going to make them super ready for graduation and college.

We’ll be preparing them to be ’TSI-ready’ in the fall so that they can begin taking dual enrollment courses in the spring,” he added.

The TSI Assessment (TSIA) is designed to help colleges and universities determine if students are prepared for college-level course work in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.

This upcoming year, the VMA administrative team and campus personnel will welcome over 800 students when classes begin on Monday, Aug. 27.
