SAN BENITO — Nearly three decades of wear and tear — chipped paint, damaged flooring and missing insulation.

It could all be seen in the aging gym at the Boys and Girls Club of San Benito.

But that was then.

In December, the Boys and Girls Club celebrated the completion of the facility’s $250,000 gym and restroom renovations with a red ribbon cutting.

With the help of donated time and material from local subcontractors and vendors, a $5,000 donation from Noble Texas Builders and a $150,000 grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy, the club was able to complete renovations just in time for its basketball program.

Noble Texas Construction Vice President Alfredo Garcia Jr. said he became a Boys and Girls Club board member at the beginning of the project.

“ This really hit close to home for me because I’m from San Benito and I’m actually a product of the Boys and Girls Club,” Garcia said. “It’s kind of had some struggles in the past and that’s why I got involved with the Boys and Girls Club. I wanted to see what I could do to help so when the project came up, it was just a no-brainer.”

Boys and Girls Club of San Benito President Liz Chavez said the board gave themselves a strict timeline to have the new gym up and running within a three-month time frame.

“ We basically did an overhaul because everything is brand new,” Chavez said. “Everybody was amazed at the change because it was like day and night the way it looked.”

The club’s gym and office restrooms received a complete redesign and repair on existing toilets and plumbing.

Gym renovations include new storage, doors and paint, wall padding, replaced gym flooring, new light fixtures, basketball and volleyball equipment, two large fans and repaired ceiling insulation.

According to Chavez, the renovations were long overdue.

The building hadn’t received updates since it was built in 1991.

The club’s new renovations coincide with the improvements of the actual organization itself, which consists of new programs, board members and community-oriented leadership.

“ The club has been through a lot these past couple of years,” Chavez said. “Our priority of course is to help keep the doors open and continue building instrumental partnerships that we have gained with the city and the school district.”

According to Chavez, the Boys and Girls Club is looking to create a volleyball program in August along with help from the San Benito school district.

“ We’re very excited to move forward and have nothing but positivity going forward,” Chavez said. “We thank the community for helping us get where we are at this point.”
