HARLINGEN — Steve Hinojosa was on the Friday red-eye flying the friendly skies with his family.

He was getting his rest before the Harlingen Triathlon Festival started on Saturday morning a few hours before they landed.

They were flying in from San Francisco to visit family for the summer.

After landing at Valley International Airport, Steve, 30, headed to Victor Park where he was going to hit the swimming lanes hard.

His family followed right behind him to cheer him on before the challenge began at 7 a.m.

He had signed up as a participant in the Second Annual Harlingen Triathlon a few days before he left his home in Daley, California.

The first leg of the competition was the swimming segment, followed by cycling and finally the corresponding run for each race.

“I wanted to participate in the race because it’s a community event,” said Steve, a former Santa Rosa resident. “And because it would be good practice for the California triathlon competitions I want to enter.”

Steve arrived early at Victor Park where many Valley, state and Mexico athletes were also ready to take on weekend challenge.

“It was a great event,” Steve said after finishing the challenge. “There was so much competition.”

A total of 80 participants all finished the swim, bike and run event hosted by the city of Harlingen and Footworks Start to Finish Productions.

Participants began the challenge at the Victor Park swimming pool and took on the short course - 400 meter swim, 12 mile bike, 3 mile run or long course — 800 meter swim, 24 mile bike, 6 mile run.

Steve took on the long course and placed 10th out of 12 in his age group.

“I finished the challenge in little over three hours,” Steve said.
