Adickes said when he took the HPD job he made a two-year commitment with the city. He's the been the chief for four years and has been in law enforcement for 35 years.

"This is an emotional decision that did not come easily because of my love for law enforcement, the men and women who wear the badge every day, our civilian leaders, and the people we serve – the Citizens of Harlingen," Adickes posted on Facebook.

The chief said he will be in the office this week and next and then retirement begins.

STATEMENT FROM HARLINGEN POLICE CHIEF JEFFRY ADICKES VIA FACEBOOK:

All,

Four years ago this month my family and I made a two year commitment to the Citizens of Harlingen and the Harlingen Police Department. These four years have provided some of the most challenging personal and professional moments in my career as we stood between those that would do violence to others but at the same time it also has been equally as rewarding. It has been a tremendous honor to serve our Community and to walk the streets of this City and the halls of HPD.

In my 35th year of law enforcement and public safety I am retiring as your Chief of Police and stepping out of a sworn law enforcement officer career that began in 1984. This is an emotional decision that did not come easily because of my love for law enforcement, the men and women who wear the badge every day, our civilian leaders, and the people we serve – the Citizens of Harlingen. I will be in the office a few days this week and next and then look to quiet time and next chapters.

I am very proud of the accomplishments that our #HARLINGENHEROES have made at HPD over the last four years and I am also very confident our City and police department are in the hands of some tremendous people who will build on those accomplishments and continue to fulfill our mission to be a very safe City while at the same time providing caring and compassionate customer service. As a Chief I am blessed to call each of you Friend.

There are so many people to say thank you to that I would be unable to include all here so I will just say thank you for your warmth and kindness to Sonya and I and for the love this Community has shared with us,..

That love is returned, Jeff
