SAN BENITO — A total of $40 million in bonds for a district aquatics center, fine arts center and multi-purpose indoor sports facility have been approved by voters.

But when and where will the facilities be built?

San Benito CISD Board of Trustees talked about that very issue Thursday in conjunction with the Brighton Group LLC firm regarding pre-design plans for the district’s projects.

According to Brighton Group LLC Principal Managing Partner Joseph Palacios, the bond projects are currently in the “critical stages.”

Palacios believes maximizing the use of every square feet and every dollar is going to assure the community they are getting the best return on their investment dollars.

“ That’s primarily what we’re going to be focusing on in this stage as we get ready to get the construction companies on board and get ready to go into construction,” Palacios said.

The firm is optimistic about completing all three facilities within a 2-year period, according to Palacios.

However, some of the facilities are expected to finish sooner than others.

The multi-purpose indoor sports facility will be built near the Greyhound Stadium.

Brighton Group LLC personnel are looking at an eight to 10-month construction period for the multi-purpose facility and believe it will be finished this year.

Members of the board of trustees believe an ideal location for the performing arts center and the aquatics center will be near the Dr. Raul Garza Jr. STEAM Academy.

According to Palacios, the facilities will be under construction in 2019 with a finish date around 2020.

A few of the district’s program directors discussed the design of the multi-purpose sports facility during the meeting.

Director of Athletics Daniel Gomez said the location of the multi-purpose indoor sports facility is set “pretty well” for its purpose.

“ This facility is going to service not only the athletic department, but the school in general,” he explained. “This is important because the heat here in the Valley is something that we take very seriously when it comes to our athletes and other groups who practice outside, such as band.”

Overall, both Gomez and Band Director Dayri Mendoza believe space is what is needed more than anything in the multi-purpose facility.

Superintendent Dr. Nate Carman said the board of trustees is very fortunate the community entrusted it with the bond funds and is looking forward to having quality facilities for the students to enjoy for many years to come.
