SAN BENITO — Pep rallies are all about cheering on the team before a big game, but this one was different.

Instead, the San Benito High School football team decided to cheer on their fellow student and former football player, Bruce Maxwell.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and according to the Children Cancer Research Fund, every day 42 families receive news that their child has cancer.

In December 2016, Bruce was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma stage three.

He had to take the rest of his junior year off for treatment, making him a year behind where he was supposed to be.

But the disease didn’t keep him down for long.

Bruce is now in remission and redoing his junior year.

The Quarterback Club and the football team decided to recognize Bruce at the pep rally Friday with his family in the crowd.

In a gym filled with students cheering and the band playing, Bruce stood out with his neon yellow backpack.

Then he was called down to the middle of the floor.

“It surprised me a lot,” Bruce said. “I knew it was awareness month so I kind of thought about it for a little bit.”

A football displaying the names of the varsity players was presented to Bruce as he went down the line of players, who embraced him in a hug.

Before being diagnosed, Bruce played for the junior varsity team.

Playing since he was five, Bruce had to give up playing football.

“Once in awhile I go out just to support the team,” Bruce said. “Let them know I’m there no matter what.”

After graduation, he wants to serve his country and join the Navy.
